Sounds like Calgary Flames are ready to spend big money this summer

The Calgary Flames could wind up making much more aggressive roster moves this offseason than many anticipated.

There has been plenty of speculation in recent weeks that Flames management is prepared to spend significant money this offseason, despite the fact that they are still relatively early into their retooling efforts.

As per PuckPedia, they have north of $17 million in cap space, giving GM Craig Conroy plenty of options, whether it be picking up an asset in free agency, via offer sheet, or perhaps a trade.

” I would say probably not just on the free agent front. They’re willing to utilize the cap space, they’re willing to spend,” Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli said on Sportsnet 960’s Big Show with Rusic and Rose. “They want to be as aggressive as possible on the trade market to try and fill some of the holes on this team’s roster.

“They’re not going to be giving out five-, six-, seven-year deals to guys that are 30. It just doesn’t make any sense in terms of their thought process.”

The Flames’ biggest need as a franchise going forward is a number-one centreman. It’s a position they lack not only on their current roster but also in their prospect pipeline. They will likely attempt to address it by selecting at least one centreman with one of their two first-round picks this June, though with their first pick not coming until 18th overall, landing a future first-line centre is far from a guarantee.

They could also look to address the issue by potentially acquiring a centreman, or perhaps a higher pick at the upcoming draft, by trading defenceman Rasmus Andersson. The 28-year-old has just one year remaining on his contract, with speculation suggesting his days in Calgary are numbered.

While it remains to be seen how the Flames will utilize their cap space this offseason, fans should expect bigger moves than we saw last summer.
