The Calgary Flames will be one of the smallest of the 32 NHL teams entering the 2025-26 season.

Despite having 6-foot-8 Adam Klapka and 6-foot-6 Kevin Bahl on their roster, the Flames are a small group overall. In fact, they are tied with three other teams for being the lightest roster in the entire NHL.

As per Elite Prospects, the Flames have an average weight of 194 lb. That ties with the Colorado Avalanche, Vancouver Canucks, and Pittsburgh Penguins for the lightest group in the league. The Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs, meanwhile, have the heaviest rosters at an average of 207 lb.

Part of this is because some veteran players like Joel Hanley and Ryan Lomberg are on the small size when it comes to your average player. Another big part of it is that the Flames are a young bunch, with several players such as Zayne Parekh, Matvei Gridin, Matt Coronato, Connor Zary, and Sam Honzek likely to put on more weight in the coming years.

What’s really interesting, however, is that aside from goaltender Dustin Wolf, Martin Pospisil is the lightest player on the Flames roster, entering the 2025-26 season at 173 lb. Wolf, meanwhile, is listed at 166 lb.

Though some NHL teams still put a major emphasis on size, it’s clear that the Flames brass is focused more on overall skill. We are seeing smaller players get more opportunities in today’s game, and the Flames are living proof of that.

Despite being on the smaller size, this isn’t a group that opposing teams should expect to push around. Klapka is the tallest forward in the NHL, and Pospisil, despite being on the lighter side, is a tough customer. The same goes for Lomberg, who, despite being the shortest player on the Flames roster at 5-foot-9, is willing to drop the gloves with anybody at any given time.
