The Calgary Flames have locked up head coach Ryan Huska on a two-year contract extension that will carry through the 2027-28 season.

Huska, who is set to enter his third season as the head coach of the Flames, helped lead his 2024-25 roster, one which was expected by many to be a draft lottery team, to a 41-27-14 record. Before his head coaching position, he spent five seasons with the Flames as an assistant.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue leading this team and to build on the foundation we’ve started,” said Huska. “I believe in this group, in their character, talent, and potential. I’m excited about the direction we are heading. I want to thank Craig [Conroy], the ownership, and the entire organization for their trust and support. We are committed to pushing forward and bringing success back to Calgary.”

A number of young players have seen impressive growth under Huska. Matt Coronato scored 24 goals in 2024-25, his first full NHL season, while others such as Connor Zary and Kevin Bahl have also taken big steps. That, according to GM Craig Conroy, played a big part in the decision to hand out this extension.

“We’re thrilled to extend Ryan for two more years,” Conroy said. “He’s done an excellent job creating a strong culture in our room and helping our team take steps in the right direction. His communication, work ethic, and commitment to developing our players have been outstanding. We believe in his vision and are confident he’s the right coach to lead us forward.”

This deal comes as little surprise, as it was reported last week that the two sides were working out extension details.

Huska did a great job in 2024-25 of understanding the roster he was dealing with. Knowing his team wasn’t going to score many goals, he put forth a strong defensive scheme, which allowed them to remain in the playoff race until their final game of the regular season.

Huska will look for further improvement from his group this season as they work to return to the playoffs for the first time since the 2021-22 campaign.
