An Eastern Conference team is said to be showing significant interest in Calgary Flames defenceman Rasmus Andersson.
Andersson, who is set to be entering the final year of his contract going into the 2025-26 season, is expected to be traded by the Flames, whether in the offseason or potentially at the 2026 trade deadline. It’s anticipated that plenty of teams will show interest in the 28-year-old, though according to a recent report, the Ottawa Senators already have major interest in making a move for him.
Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch recently reported that the Senators were interested in acquiring Andersson last season, though the Flames were adamant to all teams throughout the 2024-25 campaign that they weren’t planning on moving him. Now that his future in Calgary appears more bleak, Garrioch believes the Senators would be interested once again, though on one condition.
“If the Senators were to make that move, Andersson would have to be signed to an extension, which means the return would be high,” Garrioch wrote.
Should Andersson sign an extension before a trade, it would allow the Flames to receive a much bigger return, as noted by Garrioch. Having been a very reliable top-pairing defenceman in Calgary for several seasons, trading him should allow GM Craig Conroy to bring back several assets to help the Flames as they continue to build towards the future.
Also notable in all of this is that Andersson had a modified no-trade clause kick in ahead of the 2024-25 season, which allows him to submit a six-team no-trade list. Interestingly enough, Anthony Di Marco of Daily Faceoff has reported that sources have told him the Senators are one of the six teams on that list. That said, their success this past season could perhaps be enough to have him reconsider things on that front.
Regardless of where Andersson ultimately ends up, it seems a trade rather than an extension is going to be the outcome. When that trade takes place, however, remains to be seen.
