What Calgary Flames players said after snapping eight-game losing streak

The Calgary Flames left the Saddledome feeling quite good about themselves on Sunday night.

Despite it only being their 10th outing of the regular season, it was a crucial one for the Flames, who entered the evening on an eight-game losing streak. That is no longer, as they were able to put together a solid 60-minute effort in a 5-1 win over the New York Rangers.

“This one feels good,” said Dustin Wolf, who stopped 29 of the 30 shots he faced. “This is a building block in the right direction. We played a pretty solid full game here at home.”

While Wolf was great when called upon, he finally got the offensive run support he’s been in search of all season. Several individuals stepped up with big performances, perhaps none more so than Blake Coleman, who had a two-goal outing, including a massive short-handed marker, to give him a team-leading five tallies on the season.

“The last few games, we honestly thought we played pretty well, just couldn’t finish and were pretty undisciplined,” Coleman said. “We corrected those things today and got a couple bounces. It feels good to get a win. Doesn’t mean much if you can’t build on it, but it feels good today.”

Another who had a solid game was Connor Zary, who played down the middle on a line with Yegor Sharangovich and Joel Farabee. He was able to set Sharangovich up for his first of the season in the second period, a goal which could go a long way in helping both get their confidence going.

“I would just say it’s a weight off our shoulders,” Zary said. “It’s been a tough stretch for us. We’ve had games where we’ve done the right thing, and we haven’t come up with the result. I think tonight we kind of put it together. There were still makes, still stuff that we need to fix … At the end of the day, you just feel good to get a win.”

One big storyline coming into this game was the fact that Matt Coronato, who scored 24 goals a season ago, was a healthy scratch. It certainly won’t sit well with the 22-year-old, though his teammates are very confident he’ll get back to being a difference maker once he gets back in the lineup.

“We always have Matty’s back. It’s hockey, right? It’s life, it sucks,” Zary said. “We know how good Matty is. He’s an elite goal scorer. At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter too much … he’s got such a good attitude, and he’s such a good person. You never want to see a guy kind of get knocked down, but I think he’s going to take it in stride.

“I think he’s going to take it in stride, and, you know what, you get a little pissed off. Obviously, he’s going to be happy for us, but personally, I think you get a little pissed off. You come with a little bit of extra juice, and he goes and plays his game. I don’t think it’s a knock on him at all. He’s a good player. They gave him the contract they did for a reason, and he’ll be just fine.”

Though coaches don’t often like to tinker with a winning lineup, the expectation is that Coronato will get back into the lineup on Tuesday.

“Just for Matt to be Matt,” head coach Ryan Huska said on what he’s looking for from Coronato moving forward. “Not feel like he’s gotta do something every shift, it’s just go out there and play his game. When Matt does that, for me, his work ethic is never in question. He’s a try-too-hard guy sometimes. He wants to help the way in whatever way he can.”

Though there’s still a big hole for the now 2-7-1 Flames to dig their way out of, Sunday night’s win was a step in the right direction. They’ll look to keep the momentum going on the road this Tuesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
