Longtime Calgary Flames announcer Peter Maher has passed away

Some terrible news came out of Calgary early this afternoon, as long-time Flames radio voice Peter Maher has passed away at the age of 79.

Maher was an absolute icon in the city of Calgary, having been the radio voice of the Flames for 33 years. During that stretch, he did not miss a single game. Very fittingly, the current Flames’ radio crew calls games out of the Peter Maher Broadcast Booth at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Maher began calling Flames games beginning in 1980 right until his retirement following the 2013-14 season. He didn’t miss a single game over that lengthy stretch, during which time his voice could be heard on CFAC.

“It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of our dad, Peter Maher,” a statement from the Maher family reads. “To so many people, Peter was the longtime voice of the Calgary Flames. To us, he was simply Dad.

“We are heartbroken by his passing and grateful for the love, friendship and support he received throughout his life.”

Despite retiring following the 2013-14 season, Maher would still frequent the Saddledome from time to time, including once a year at the end of each season when he would present the “Peter Maher Good Guy Award.” The award is given out annually by local media to the player deemed to show the best sincerity, integrity, dedication, and respect.

“Peter’s legacy extends well beyond the broadcast booth,” the Flames said in part of a lengthy statement. “He was a passionate ambassador for the Calgary Flames, a devoted member of the community and a person whose warmth, generosity and love for the game touched countless lives.

“The Calgary Flames extend their deepest condolences to Peter’s family, friends, former colleagues and the many fans who came to know and love him over his extraordinary career.”

Though Maher may no longer be with us, some of his classic catchphrases, including “Yeah baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!,” will continue to be remembered fondly by Flames fans across the globe.

Maher’s family said that information regarding funeral arrangements will be shared in the coming days.
