Ex-Calgary Flames forward Jakob Pelletier heating up after slow start in Philadelphia

After a bit of an adjustment period, former Calgary Flames forward Jakob Pelletier seems to be settling into his new roots.

It’s been a hectic season for the 24-year-old, who began the 2024-25 campaign by being placed on waivers. After going unclaimed, he spent 20 games in the AHL before being summoned by the Flames in early December.

Pelletier made the most of his recall, providing some secondary scoring with four goals and 11 points in 24 games. He brought a ton of energy, not only in the locker room but also by providing physicality despite his small frame. He was even used at times on the penalty kill by head coach Ryan Huska. Little did he know, his strong play was boosting his trade value.

The Flames ended up trading Pelletier, along with Andrei Kuzmenko, a 2025 second-round pick, and a 2028 seventh-round pick to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee. Shortly after the deal, GM Craig Conroy admitted how emotional the move made Pelletier, who was beginning to prove himself as a full-time NHLer in Calgary.

Given the shock of the trade, Pelletier got off to a very slow start in Philadelphia. Through his first 14 outings, he had managed just two assists. As of late, however, he appears to be rediscovering his offensive touch.

Pelletier has impressed for the Flyers as of late, having picked up a goal and three helpers through his last five outings. Non-coincidentally, his ice time over those last five games has seen an uptick.

Over an eight-game stretch in March, Pelletier logged less than 10 minutes of ice time. In his most recent six, however, he’s been back up over the double-digit mark, and it’s paying dividends for both him and the Flyers.

Though he’s still got a ways to go before establishing himself as a true NHLer, the many Flames fans who grew to love Pelletier can feel at ease knowing he’s beginning to settle into his new surroundings.
