When Zayne Parekh should make his Calgary Flames debut

Calgary Flames fans, the time has finally arrived.

There had been plenty of speculation over the last week, though it wasn’t until Tuesday that the Flames officially called up top prospect Zayne Parekh.

Parekh and his Saginaw Spirit teammates were recently eliminated from the OHL playoffs, allowing the Flames to make this move.

“My agent called me [and my parents], and it was a little bittersweet, but I was really excited right away,” Parekh told Brendan Parker of Flames TV. “It took the sad emotions a way a bit, but they are lingering a bit still.”

Now, the question becomes when will he suit up for his first NHL game?

As Flames fans are well aware, Parekh is loaded with talent. The ninth-overall selection from last year’s draft is coming off of a season in which he recorded a ridiculous 33 goals and 107 points in just 61 games. His 107 points led all OHL defencemen in scoring by a wide margin, with Sam Dickinson coming in second at 91.

“I’m really excited to see the boys,” Parekh added. “A little nervous, I haven’t seen them in awhile. I’m excited to be a part of it, be able to watch and experience this whole fight they’re in.”

Despite his extremely high skill level, it’s important to remember that Parekh is just 19 years old. There are going to be growing pains that come with getting adjusted to professional hockey, and the Flames organization seems well aware of that. To the young defencemen’s credit, however, he’s confident that he’s been able to round out his game in a big way since training camp last fall.

“I’ve added a lot to my game, especially on the other side of the puck,” Parekh explained. “I’ve got a lot better at going through hands. My angles and gaps are a lot better. Around the net I’ve got to continue to add some strength … I think with the puck, I’ve taken it to another level.”

As long as the Flames remain in the hunt for a playoff spot, Parekh isn’t expected to get into the lineup. They currently sit four points shy of the Minnesota Wild for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference while holding a game in hand. That said, while they are still very much in the race right now, that could change this evening.

Both the Flames and Wild are in action this evening, with the former taking on the Anaheim Ducks and the latter set to play the San Jose Sharks. While fans are undoubtedly hoping to see the Flames win tonight, a loss, paired with a Wild win, would all but mathematically eliminate them from playoff contention.

What’s important to note, however, is that the Flames are set to go up against the Wild on Friday in what will be their biggest outing of the season. Should they drop that outing, there is a very good chance that Parekh could make his debut as soon as Sunday evening against the Sharks.

Should the Flames win one or both of their next two outings, that will change this timeline. If at any point they are to be eliminated from playoff contention, fans should expect to see Parekh make his NHL debut the very next game. Regardless of how it all plays out, fans can be assured that he’s just happy to be along for the ride.

“[I’m excited] just being around the guys, living the NHL lifestyle for a little bit here,” Parekh said. “Even here, we’re at a really nice hotel. It’s different from being in the OHL. Just excited to be around the guys and learn. There’s so much I can learn in the next couple weeks, hopefully a few months.”
