Calgary Flames reveal opening-night roster and here's who made the team

The Calgary Flames’ 23-man roster is locked and loaded for the 2026-27 season.

The Flames revealed their roster on Monday afternoon, just three days before their season opener against the Seattle Kraken. Overall, there weren’t a ton of surprises.

As we’ve known for some time, Jonathan Huberdeau won’t be available to start the 2026-27 season as he continues to recover from hip resurfacing surgery. His absence created an opening up front, and the man claiming the job is Brennan Othmann.

Othmann was acquired by the Flames last season at the trade deadline from the New York Rangers in exchange for prospect Jacob Battaglia. The 23-year-old had a solid camp, but was also helped by the fact that he wasn’t waiver-exempt. Rather than risk losing him, the Flames will carry him as their 13th forward to begin the season.

Meanwhile, head coach Ryan Huska and his staff have elected to go with eight defencemen.

The one roster move that surprised some came last week when the Flames elected to send Hunter Brzustewicz down to the AHL. That move was made in order to ensure the 21-year-old continues playing heavy minutes with the Wranglers rather than being in and out of the press box early on this season.

Instead, the Flames opted to go with a pair of veterans in Joel Hanley and Brayden Pachal to round out their back end. Both players will likely see plenty of time in the press box this coming season, but both are capable of jumping into the lineup and handling third-pairing minutes when required.

There are no surprises between the pipes, either. Dustin Wolf will continue to serve as the Flames’ No.1 netminder, while Devin Cooley will work as his backup.
