Calgary Flames cut 16 players and put eight of them on waivers

The Calgary Flames have trimmed down their training camp roster significantly following Thursday night’s outing against the Seattle Kraken.

In total, the Flames announced 16 cuts on Friday morning. Of the 16 cuts, these seven players have been reassigned to the Wranglers.

  • Tyson Gross (C)
  • Axel Hurtig (D)
  • Arsenii Sergeev (G)

The one somewhat surprising name on that list is Hunter Brzustewicz, a player many figured would be on the opening night roster after logging 34 NHL games last season. Instead, he will return to the Wranglers and look to play top-pairing minutes.

There were also eight players who the Flames chose to place on waivers on Friday, meaning all other 31 NHL teams will have a chance to claim them.

Again, there are no major surprises here. Rory Kerins, despite being an excellent AHL producer, hasn’t appeared to be a part of the Flames’ long-term plans for some time.

There were some who thought that Sam Morton or Dryden Hunt could land a spot with Jonathan Huberdeau out due to injury. Ultimately, neither were able to make a strong enough impression on the coaching staff.

The one other cut the Flames announced on Friday was Chase Harrington, who was reassigned to the WHL’s Spokane Chiefs. The 18-year-old made an extremely strong impression in training camp, lasting far longer than most expected.

With these cuts, the Flames now have 27 players remaining on their training camp roster (16 forwards, eight defencemen, three goalies). That means they have just four more cuts to make ahead of the 2026-27 season.

The Flames have just one preseason game remaining, which will take place on Saturday night at Rogers Place against the Edmonton Oilers.
