The Calgary Flames couldn’t have asked for a much better start to their 2025-26 season.
Playing just a few hours up north against the Edmonton Oilers, the Flames came out of the gates slowly and were trailing 3-0. They rallied from there, however, to defeat their provincial rival 4-3 in a shootout.
Playing a big role in the win was 19-year-old Matvei Gridin, who was able to open the scoring with his first-ever NHL goal in his first game.

Afterward, Gridin was recognized by his teammates with a new post-game reward.

Captain Mikael Backlund chose to give a newly revealed jacket ā dedicated to the player of the game ā to Gridin. The red suit jacket, which features a Flames logo on the front, appears to be the start of a new tradition for the Flames, which fans can expect to see following every win throughout the season.
“F*ck yeah, boys,” Gridin said. “[Nazem Kadri], [Dustin Wolf], f*ck yeah. Let’s win one more.”
As mentioned by Gridin, Wolf was absolutely incredible on Wednesday night, kicking aside 32 of the 35 shots he faced, while also allowing just one goal on eight shootout attempts. Kadri, meanwhile, was able to pick up the primary assist on Gridin’s goal, while also burying the shootout winner.

The Flames will look to keep the good times rolling on Thursday night, as they are set to face the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena in what is the second half of a back-to-back. Puck drop in that outing is set for 8 p.m. MDT.
