Jason Robertson’s name continues to generate plenty of buzz on the trade market as he and the Dallas Stars have yet to work out a contract extension.
The 25-year-old has just one season remaining on his contract that carries a $7.75 million cap hit. Upon expiry, he will become an RFA once again, and is reportedly looking for a big ticket that it doesn’t seem the Stars are all too keen on signing.
With several other talented youthful forwards including Roope Hintz, Mikko Rantanen, and 22-year-old Wyatt Johnston, the Stars seemingly view Robertson as expendable, and there are plenty of teams who would love to have him.
One of those teams is the Calgary Flames, who are still early in their retooling stage but would prefer to add young, NHL-ready players rather than draft picks and prospects. Robertson is certainly that, and the two teams may line up as better trading partners than you’d think.
One area the Stars need to improve on is their back end, in particular on the right side. That would make Rasmus Andersson a prime candidate to acquire, and it’s hard to imagine why the 28-year-old wouldn’t be open to signing an extension with a Stanley Cup contender like the Stars.
Given the fact that Robertson is over a point-per-game player through his 374-game career, the Flames would be forced to part ways with more than just Andersson, though doing so would be worth adding a player of this calibre. All it comes down to is how much Robertson is seeking on a new deal.
The Flames do have plenty of cap space to give Robertson a lot of money, but overpaying a newcomer could set a bad precedent for the rest of the group. While Robertson has by no means been bad the past two seasons, he hasn’t been close to the 100-point player he was in 2022-23. He also failed to crack USA’s 4 Nations Face-Off roster, which is perhaps an indicator that some in the hockey world aren’t as high on him as others.
While this is speculation rather than intel, even NHL insider Frank Seravalli floated a similar idea between the Flames and Stars just days ago.
“It’s been pretty quiet on the Andersson front. I think everybody’s curious what happens with Robertson; will they be able to work out an extension here in short order? And if not, are they making a move?” Seravalli quipped.
“The Flames would love to get their hands on Robertson, I think, in a deal that could involve Rasmus Andersson, which would be such a good fit.”

Andersson is on a very reasonable deal with an AAV of just $4.55 million, but is looking for a long-term, lucrative extension that he became eligible to sign as of July 1. It’s only a matter of time before he’s traded, but whether it’s to the Stars or elsewhere remains to be seen.
