Calgary Flames GM Craig Conroy is keeping everybody on their toes.
Many expected the Flames GM to be active going into the trade deadline. Few expected MacKenzie Weegar to be the player he shipped out.
That was exactly how things played out, as Weegar was traded to the Utah Mammoth on Wednesday night in exchange for Olli Maatta, forward prospect Jonathan Castagna, and three second-round picks in 2026.
Though Weegar’s name was brought up from time to time in trade speculation, several other Flames candidates were thought to be on the move over him. That said, this move, which signals an outright rebuild in Calgary, may wind up being the only one they make ahead of the March 6 trade deadline.
No surprise Zach Whitecloud has a large audience of teams circling. 15 or more. Flames need to be blown away by an offer to trade him. He’s key in helping their young D. Tons of interest in Coleman. Offers aren’t good enough. 40-60 he’s traded at this point.

As per TSN’s Darren Dreger, the Flames are very reluctant to trade Zach Whitecloud. That makes plenty of sense given that they’ve moved on from two right-shot defencemen in Weegar and Rasmus Andersson.
Dreger also mentioned that Blake Coleman, who felt like a lock to be traded, isn’t garnering the interest the Flames had hoped. The 34-year-old has one additional season remaining on his contract.
“Offers aren’t good enough,” Dreger wrote. “40-60 he’s traded at this point.”
Other Flames who have been discussed as potential trade candidates include Nazem Kadri, Ryan Lomberg, Brayden Pachal, and Joel Hanley. The final three mentioned would bring little back in return, while Kadri’s contract makes him a difficult option to move midseason.
Based on how things are shaping up, Flames fans should prepare themselves for the possibility that no more moves are coming. That said, it should also be noted that seemingly nobody had any sort of intel that Weegar was going to be on the move yesterday. It’s a good reminder that things can change at any given second.
