What Calgary Flames forward Honzek said after scoring his first NHL goal

Calgary Flames forward Sam Honzek was finally rewarded for his strong play to start the season on Tuesday night.

Honzek, who has suited up for nine of the Flames’ 11 games this season, has fit in seamlessly on a line with Blake Coleman and Mikael Backlund. Despite still being just 20 years old, he’s been one of the Flames’ most consistent forwards.

Though Honzek came into Tuesday’s game versus the Toronto Maple Leafs with just one point, he was getting all sorts of scoring opportunities as of late, suggesting he was due sooner than later. His solid work this season finally paid off, as he scored not only his first of the season, but the first of his NHL career.

Honzek’s goal was a massive one at the time, as it pulled the Flames into a 3-3 tie. It didn’t stay that way for long, however, as Max Domi was able to score his second of the night just minutes later to help lead the Leafs to a 4-3 win.

“I’m really, really happy that it finally went in after hitting a couple posts and being kind of unlucky,” Honzek said. “I’m really happy it went in, but if the result of the game were different, it would have been way better.

“It’s not [ideal], but it’s a part of hockey. [It] can be a tied game, and then ten seconds later it can be [in] the back of your net. We need to learn from that, especially in this game. I think in this game, we had lots of turnovers, and lots of penalties in the first period, too. We need to work on that.”

Though fans and Honzek himself would have preferred his first goal to come in a winning effort, it was a continued step in the right direction for the rookie winger. Should he keep this play up, he won’t be coming out of the lineup anytime soon.
