It’s been quite the month for Calgary Flames goaltender Devin Cooley.

The 29-year-old went viral after an interview with Flames TV host Brendan Parker following a win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Oct. 19. The clip has made the rounds well beyond hockey circles, turning Cooley into an unlikely internet sensation.

His now-famous soundbite was even discussed on The Joe Rogan Experience, and the attention doesn’t appear to be slowing down. Cooley recently sat down for a virtual interview with ESPN, where he discussed the Flames’ turnaround and offered his thoughts on some memorable athlete interviews.

The goaltender has plenty to be happy about. Calgary is riding a four-game winning streak, with Cooley having started all four of those games. It’s quite the turnaround for a team that had a horrific start to the season.

“It was just a matter of time,” Cooley said of the Flames’ resurgence. “Everyone was panicking over a small sample size and it’s like, ‘Hey guys, we’re going to be fine. It’s not a big deal, we were just getting unlucky.’

“Now things are starting to go our way. We’re starting to get the bounces, everyone is buying into the system, we’re playing great defensively, and we’re also having a lot of fun.”

However, ESPN wasn’t just interested in talking hockey. The interview also offered a glimpse into the personality that has made Cooley such a popular figure online.

After briefly discussing his pet bunny, Tito, Cooley played a game in which he broke down what other athletes were really trying to say during interviews.

One of the examples featured New York Giants quarterback Jameis Winston explaining that he’s “called to be the light of the world and the salt of the earth.”

“That sounds like a little bit of religious psychosis, I don’t know,” a laughing Cooley said. “That’s pretty crazy.

“He’s definitely got a lot of confidence. That’s great. You want that out of your quarterback. I don’t know what else to say about that one.”

Between his viral interviews and his recent success on the ice, Cooley is giving Flames fans a bunch of reasons to be excited. If he can continue riding this hot stretch of play, there should be plenty more to come.
