Calgary Flames fans will have to get used to staying up a little later for hockey.
Alberta officially moved away from daylight saving time over the weekend, refusing to turn back the clocks. Instead, the province will remain on what is now known as “Alberta Time,” abbreviated as “ABT,” year-round.
The change has resulted in Alberta being just one hour behind Ontario rather than the previous two hours. With British Columbia also moving away from seasonal clock changes, Alberta will remain an hour ahead of the Canadian West Coast.
However, the change will have a noticeable impact on the Calgary Flames’ schedule, particularly when they travel to face teams in the Pacific Time Zone.
Previously, California, Nevada, and Washington were just one hour behind Alberta. Now, that difference has increased to two hours, meaning some games that would have traditionally started at 8 p.m. in Calgary will now begin an hour later.
So, what does that mean for Flames fans? Namely, that there are some later nights ahead.
Late start times incoming
The biggest change Flames fans will notice is the number of games scheduled for 9 p.m. Alberta Time.
With the Pacific Time Zone now two hours behind Alberta, games played in cities like Seattle, Los Angeles and San Jose will have later start times for viewers in Calgary.
There are six remaining road games on the Flames’ schedule with 9 p.m. ABT starts:
- Nov. 4 @ Seattle Kraken
- Nov. 14 @ Los Angeles Kings
- Nov. 17 @ San Jose Sharks
- Feb. 13 @ Vegas Golden Knights
- Feb. 15 @ Los Angeles Kings
- Feb. 27 @ Vancouver Canucks
That includes a particularly busy stretch in November, when the Flames will play three road games against Pacific Division opponents with 9 p.m. starts in a span of less than two weeks.
The change also means Flames fans won’t see as many of those early evening starts when Calgary travels to face Eastern Conference opponents. Those games will generally begin an hour later in Alberta than they would have before the clock change.
Few home games will see changes
The good news for Flames fans is that the change won’t have much of an impact on their routine when watching games at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
The majority of Calgary’s home games will continue to feature familiar evening start times, with most scheduled between 6 and 8 p.m. Alberta Time. In fact, there will be just two 9 p.m. puck drops at the Saddledome; Dec. 26 against the Canucks, and Jan. 16 versus the Kings.
There will still be some afternoon games throughout the season, including several weekend matinees, but fans won’t have to worry about a major overhaul to the home schedule.
Ultimately, it’s the road games against Pacific Division opponents that will require the biggest adjustment for Flames fans, with a handful of 9 p.m. starts now on the calendar.
