Calgary Flames forward Huberdeau fares miserably in latest contract value rankings
Calgary Flames fans are well aware that Jonathan Huberdeau’s contract is far from ideal, though a recent ranking shows just how bad it is.
Every year, Dom Luszczyszyn of The Athletic puts together a list of the 10 worst contracts in the NHL. Huberdeau, who has five seasons remaining with a $10.5-million cap hit, has found himself on that list several years in a row.
In both the 2024 and 2025 editions, Huberdeau was ranked as having the worst-value contract in the NHL. That was even worse than in 2023, where he found himself listed as the third-worst contract. Unfortunately for the former Florida Panthers star, things weren’t any kinder this time around.
For the third straight year, Huberdeau has once again been listed by Luszczyszyn as having the worst contract in the NHL. It comes after a season in which the 33-year-old managed just 10 goals and 25 points in 50 games.
“For the third straight season, Jonathan Huberdeau tops our list of the worst contracts in hockey,” Luszczyszyn wrote. “No shock here, but even in a rising cap world itâs difficult to justify $10.5 million for a 33-year-old forward who scored at just a 41-point clip last season.”
The Flames signed Huberdeau to an eight-year extension shortly after acquiring him from the Florida Panthers. He was just coming off a career-best season, which saw him put up 30 goals and 115 points in 80 games. Since then, his game has fallen off a cliff.
In 291 games as a Flame, Huberdeau has managed just 65 goals and 194 points. His best season with the Flames to date came in 2024-25, where he had 28 goals and 62 points in 81 outings.
The scary part for the Flames and their fan base is that this contract could look even worse moving forward.
The reason Huberdeau was limited to just 50 games last season was because of a lingering hip issue. He has since undergone hip resurfacing surgery, which few players have made successful returns from. The good news is that it sounds as though his recovery is going well, though we won’t have a real idea of how he can bounce back from such a major procedure until we see him back in game action.
Both the Flames organization and fan base will simply have to sit back and throw up a prayer that Huberdeau can get back to looking anything remotely similar to the player he was with the Panthers.
