Calgary Flames fans will get to watch their team in action as soon as the calendar flips to October.

The NHL made the decision to start the regular season earlier, beginning in 2026-27, and has also gone from an 82-game schedule to 84.

As a result of the schedule change, the regular season will kick off on Tuesday, Sept. 29, with 10 of the NHL’s 32 teams in action. The Flames will need to be a bit more patient.

Rather than beginning in late September, the Flames’ first game of the season, as well as their home opener, will come on Thursday, Oct. 1, versus the Seattle Kraken. It will also mark the Flames’ last home opener ever at the Saddledome, with Scotia Place expected to be ready for the 2027-28 campaign.

Following their home opener, the Flames will then head south to take on the Kraken in their home opener at the Climate Pledge Arena on Sunday, Oct. 4.

This year’s home opener will be an emotional one for some, as it may start to sink in just how little time remains at the Saddledome. The Flames began playing in the iconic building in 1983-84, making this their 43rd home opener.

There will be a total of 42 regular-season games at the Saddledome this season, thanks to the NHL going to an 84-game schedule. The possibility of even more remains should the Flames sneak into a playoff spot.

As for the rest of the Flames’ schedule, the NHL is set to release it all this Thursday at 11 a.m. MDT. There will be plenty of games for fans to tune into, none better than the battle of Alberta outings versus the Edmonton Oilers.

Another date that plenty will circle on the calendar is when the Minnesota Wild come to town, as it will mark the return of a fan favourite in Blake Coleman, who was traded earlier in the month.
