Calgary Flames fans have lots to say after Leafs fire GM Brad Treliving

Former Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving is back on the job market.

The Toronto Maple Leafs, who are set to miss the playoffs for the first time in a decade, announced the Treliving firing on Monday night.

“Throughout the course of this season, there has been deep analysis into both the current state of the Maple Leafs organization and the direction needed to achieve the ultimate goal of delivering a Stanley Cup championship to the city,” said MLSE president and CEO Keith Pelley.

The decision to fire Treliving comes less than three years after the Maple Leafs hired him as a replacement for Kyle Dubas. They made the playoffs twice during his tenure, including last season, which saw them take the Florida Panthers to Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semi-final.

Prior to joining the Leafs, Treliving spent nine seasons as the GM of the Flames. Opinions about him were rather mixed throughout his tenure, though fans have really turned on him after seeing the excellent work Craig Conroy has done since taking over.

Treliving failed to make any massive changes to benefit the Maple Leafs, though it was losing Mitch Marner that really set this organization back. Flames fans, to say the least, aren’t surprised to see how this all played out.

Part of the criticism surrounding Treliving in Calgary is that he failed to see that the Flames needed to enter a rebuild, which they now find themselves in. Rather than opting for that route, he chose to keep pushing for the playoffs, which included signing Jonathan Huberdeau to an eight-year, $84-million deal.

“The Calgary Flames ruined the Toronto Maple Leafs. Well, at least Brad Treliving did,” another Flames fan chimed in. “Treliving is arguably the worst GM in NHL history.”

The good news for the Flames is that they seem to have a real plan in place, something that never felt like the case when Treliving was in charge. As for the Maple Leafs, they will now begin to conduct their search for who their new GM will be.
