It may have been a small gesture from Dustin Wolf, but it meant the world to a young Calgary Flames fan.

During a TV timeout in Tuesday night’s outing versus the Colorado Avalanche, the Flames’ starting netminder noticed a sign in the crowd being held by a young fan that read, “Wolf, you are my idol.” The 24-year-old made sure to get a stick for the young man, and it was clear immediately just how much impact that decision had.

As reported by Sportsnet’s Eric Francis, the fan who received the stick is just 10 years old. He also happens to be a goalie, currently playing for the Carstairs Bruins.

“I first went down, and I said, ‘We just showed you on TV,’ and he started crying again,” Francis said. “That set me off. I could hardly finish the interview, but I said ‘What are you thinking about when he hands you that stick?’ This little boy at 10 years of age said, ‘I’m just very thankful.'”

Clearly, this is a moment this young fan won’t be forgetting anytime soon. It goes to show the impact that professional athletes have, specifically with younger fans. And, though Wolf admitted postgame he hadn’t gotten to see the video yet, it was clear that it meant a lot to him to hear how excited the young fan was.

“That’s awesome,” Wolf said. “That’s what the game is all about: [it] is for the kids. We mean a lot to them, and it’s neat to be able to make a kid’s day like that.”

Though the Flames were unable to pick up the win, Wolf was exceptional on Tuesday night, kicking aside 38 of 40 shots in what was a 3-1 loss to the Avs. He and his teammates will look for better results in their season finale on Thursday night against the LA Kings.
