It appears that the Calgary Flames and Dylan Cozens won’t become an item after all.
The 24-year-old has been linked to Calgary for the entirety of the season, speculation which continued even after the Flames traded for centreman Morgan Frost from the Philadelphia Flyers.
Cozens checked a lot of boxes for the Flames: he’s a right-handed shot, fits into their retooling timeline, has first-line potential, and is locked up through the 2029-30 season. GM Craig Conroy was absolutely interested in making a move for him, but it looks as though the Ottawa Senators have instead stepped up to acquire the 6-foot-3 centreman.

Though the deal has yet to be finalized, it appears Cozens will indeed be heading to the Senators. Based on several reports, the Senators paid a pretty high price to acquire him, moving a highly talented and young centreman of their own, Josh Norris, as well as one of their former first-round picks, Jacob Bernard-Docker.
As for the Flames, the potential of acquiring Cozens was always a move that seemed to have a better chance of taking place in the offseason. This management group, based on several reports, seems to be comfortable making few, if any, more changes this season, instead opting to reward this current group for their strong play through 62 games.
The disappointing factor to all of this is that there aren’t many right-handed centreman with Cozens’ potential who are made available all too often. It’s a position the Flames need to improve upon, though Cozens is no longer an option. Expect to hear some new names suggested come the offseason when Conroy explores the trade market to find a solution.
