We are now just one day away from August, and the Calgary Flames have yet to work out a contract with Connor Zary.
It’s become somewhat of a concern to Flames fans, who have seen several other RFAs, including Matt Coronato, Morgan Frost, Adam Klapka, and Kevin Bahl, all get locked up. Even Martin Pospisil, who has a year remaining on his deal, put pen to paper on a three-year extension on Wednesday. For Zary, however, things have been rather quiet.
While some are growing concerned over how long it is taking the two sides, GM Craig Conroy doesn’t seem to be stressing. He recently joined Logan Gordon and Patrick Dumas on the Sportsnet Today 960 show to provide a few updates on where things sit regarding Zary.
“It’s been slow,” Conroy admitted. “I understand they have a position that they’ve taken, and we kind of have a position we’re at. We know it’s going to get done. In the end, it always does. They’d probably like it to be done today, we’d like it to be done today. Sometimes it just takes a little bit longer. We’ve still got a lot of time in the summer.
“I know Connor was just in [Calgary] the other day, he was out with the guys at Winsport, so he’s in good spirits. He looks good and we’re excited. Eventually we’re going to get it done.”
There had been reports earlier in the offseason that Zary’s camp was gunning for a long-term contract, while the Flames were hoping to work out a bridge deal given the injuries the 23-year-old sustained this past season.
Zary, who the Flames selected 24th overall in 2020, is coming off of a season in which he had 13 goals and 27 points in 54 games.
