The Calgary Flames fans will notice some changes behind the bench once the 2025-26 season rolls around.

The Flames announced several changes to their coaching staff today. Trent Cull, who began the 2024-25 season as the head coach of the Calgary Wranglers but spent the second half as an assistant with the Flames, will remain with the NHL club for the upcoming season.

Prior to Cull joining the Flames, he helped lead the Wranglers to an impressive 20-8-1 record to begin the regular season. They wound up finishing the season with a record of 37-28-4-3.

The reason for Cull’s change part way through the season was due to Brad Larsen needing to take a personal leave of absence. The Flames have also announced that he will be returning to the coaching staff for the 2025-26 campaign.

One assistant coach who will not be returning, however, is Dan Lambert. The 55-year-old spent two seasons with the Flames in his assistant role, and has also spent time behind the bench with the Nashville Predators and Buffalo Sabres.

“Facing a challenging situation last season, Trent stepped in and was very impressive managing his assignments with our NHL club,” said Flames GM Craig Conroy. “We thank Dan for his contributions to the organization during the past two seasons and wish him every success with his future in the game.”

Both Larsen and Cull will work with head coach Ryan Huska as the Flames look to build off of what was a promising 2024-25 season. Expectations were quite low going into the season, but thanks in part to the great work from the coaching staff, they wound up missing the playoffs by just a single point.

The organization also announced that they are now beginning to search for a new permanent head coach of the Wranglers.
