Public art coming to Calgary Flames' new arena, Scotia Place

The construction for the Calgary Flames’ soon-to-be new home, Scotia Place, is coming together quite nicely.

There’s still a ton of work to be done, but fans who have driven past the new construction area as of late will have noticed plenty of changes to what was nothing more than bare ground months ago.

This arena will feature some great guest attractions, including a two-story sports bar and several entertainment spaces right outside the arena that fans with and without tickets can attend. The outside area will also feature plenty of artwork that is aimed to reflect the city of Calgary and those who live in it. And they are asking for your help!

Scotia Place is taking fan feedback via a survey to help decide what types of artwork those in Calgary would like to see placed outside the pending new home of the Flames. It’s a fun and unique opportunity for many Calgarians to help put their mark on the new building.

Questions from the survey include asking fans which public art themes would be most suitable for Scotia Place, with answers including gathering, celebration, ecologies, migration, and global city. Others ask what types of emotion artworks can evoke for visitors at Scotia Place and what purpose the art should serve.

“Public art is artwork created for public spaces, intended to be accessible to everyone,” an excerpt on Scotia Place’s website reads. “It can take many forms, including sculptures, murals, performances, and digital installations, often reflecting the cultures and identities of communities.”

Surveys aren’t the only way fans can have a say in the matter, either. There will also be two virtual workshops on April 14 at 10 a.m. MT and 4 p.m. MT, along with two in-person meetings on April 16 at 6 p.m. MT, and April 17 at noon MT, to help brainstorm fun and unique ideas.

While there is still plenty of construction yet to take place, Scotia Place is expected to be ready to go for the 2027-28 NHL season.
