Calgary Flames' Rasmus Andersson involved in several trade rumours heading into draft

The Calgary Flames and Rasmus Andersson were reportedly far apart when recently discussing a contract extension.

This news, which popped up late last week, comes as little surprise, as Andersson is looking for the biggest pay day of his career on what he hopes will be a long-term extension. From the Flames’ perspective, giving the 28-year-old a seven or even potentially eight-year deal doesn’t make a whole lot of sense given where they are as an organization.

Despite a down season in 2024-25, Andersson continues to generate a lot of interest from other teams. He is on a bargain contract for one more year with a cap hit of just $4.55 million, which makes him all the more intriguing to many clubs across the NHL.

There are several teams that have already been rumoured to be interested in Andersson. The Ottawa Senators have shown interest dating back to last season, while others, such as the Columbus Blue Jackets, Carolina Hurricanes, and even the Buffalo Sabres, have been mentioned. Of course, Andersson does have some power in where he ends up, as his contract has a six-team no-trade list.

The Flames are in no rush to move Andersson, as GM Craig Conroy seems to have no issue hanging onto him all the way up until the 2026 trade deadline should he not get an offer he deems reasonable in the days and months prior. That said, a move could surface as soon as the draft this weekend.

Andersson figures to bring in a decent haul for the Flames, which will help in their continued retooling efforts. Whether it’s a prospect (preferably a centreman) or draft picks, this is the biggest trade chip Conroy has had since taking over as the Flames GM.

It’s important that Conroy maximize the return, and based on the due diligence he’s shown to this point, fans should be confident that he will bring in a solid return for the Swedish blue liner.
