The City of Calgary has provided a new update on the Douglas Fir Trail in Edworthy Park, which has been closed for more than two years, and it doesn’t seem like it’s opening any time soon.
A section of the southwest Calgary trail has been closed since November 2023 due to erosion, drainage issues, and slope instability. While work continues, the City says a full reopening remains dependent on future funding.
In a previous update from the City, it shared that funding had been secured for the detailed design phase of the broader Douglas Fir Trail repairs and that it was in the process of hiring an engineering firm to determine the long-term repairs needed to reopen the trail.
In an April 2026 update, the City confirmed that Thurber Engineering has been hired to lead the detailed design, which will focus on improving slope stability, managing surface water, and addressing the overall trail conditions.
However, funding for the broader construction work needed to fully repair and reopen the trail has not been secured.

In the meantime, a smaller section of the trail that briefly opened before closing again in February due to safety concerns is still undergoing repairs, and slope stabilization work is expected to be completed by December 2026.
For any Calgarians wanting to get involved with the future of the Douglas Fir Trail, the City will be hosting engagement activities in May 2026, both online and in person.
