A new domestic screening area at the Calgary airport sounds SPEEDY

Flying out of the Calgary International Airport may have just gotten a lot simpler with the introduction of YYC’s new Centralized Screening Area.

The new area allows domestic travellers to pass through one main security screening checkpoint, rather than choosing between multiple checkpoints.

“Security screening is an integral part of everyone’s journey through the airport, and for some, it can be a moment of uncertainty,” said Chris Miles, chief operating officer at Calgary Airports, in a release.

“Centralized Screening is about giving guests more breathing room, a clearer wayfinding and a smoother experience from the moment they step into the terminal.”

The key changes include one simplified entry point, located near the domestic departures check-in, new CATSA CT X-ray screening technology to help guests move through security more efficiently, more space and clearer sightlines, and a more friendly layout designed to help travellers move through security much faster.

The new CATSA CT X-ray technology allows guests to keep large electronics, such as laptops and medical devices, as well as permitted liquids, gels, and aerosols, in their bags, rather than having to remove them.

The Calgary Airport Centralized Security Screening will also include a dedicated accessibility queue and quiet areas away from the main flow of travellers, to better support travellers of all ages and abilities.

Phase Two of the project will include an accessibility hub where guests can access information, tools and personalized support for their journey through YYC.

“We know that security screening can be especially challenging for travellers with accessibility needs, particularly those that may be invisible,” continues Miles. “This screening experience brings a calmer space and more opportunities for assistance tailored to a diverse set of needs, reflecting our commitment to building an inclusive airport for everyone.”
