A town just east of Calgary was just named one of the most underrated towns in Alberta, being noted for its attractions and stunning natural scenery.

World Atlas, one of the largest publishing resources in geography, just released its list of the seven most underrated towns in Alberta, and Drumheller made the cut.

Known as the dinosaur capital of the world, Drumheller is located around an hour and a half east of Calgary. It is home to the Royal Tyrrell Museum, which boasts one of the world’s largest displays of dinosaurs with over 130,000 fossils.Ā

It sits along the Red Deer River, a popular spot for kayaking and canoeing, and is in the badlands of Alberta. According to Travel Drumheller, ā€œDrumheller was named after Samuel Drumheller, who, after purchasing the homestead of Thomas Patrick Greentree, had it surveyed into the original Drumheller townsite and put lots on the market in 1911.ā€Ā

In 1911, Samuel Drumheller also started a coal mining operation near the town, which was a booming industry until the end of WWII, when coal lost most of its value.Ā

Drumheller was classified as a city from 1930 to 1998, until the City of Drumheller amalgamated with the Municipal District of Badlands No. 7. Together, they decided to opt for town status so that the Province of Alberta would be responsible for the highways around the area.Ā

During the amalgamation, Drumheller absorbed six hamlets that previously fell under theĀ  Municipal District of Badlands No. 7. In total, there are around 13 communities that were absorbed by the growing town, some of which are now neighbourhoods.

World Atlas suggest checking out the Hoodoos, which are unique rock formations formed by years of erosion into pillars. ā€œHorsethief and Horseshoe Canyons boast panoramic views of the layered hills and valleys of the Badlands.ā€ And of course, who could forget to mention checking out the world’s largest dinosaur while in town?
