After more than six decades of serving Alberta’s outdoor community, Breathe Outdoors has announced it will wind down operations later this year.
In a statement shared Thursday morning, the Alberta-owned and operated retailer said it will close its doors due to ongoing economic challenges.
“It is with a mix of gratitude and heavy hearts that we share some news with you today,” the statement reads.
“After 62 years of serving Alberta’s outdoor community, Breathe Outdoors (formerly Campers Village) will be winding down its business operations later this year. Ownership has made the difficult decision to cease operations, closing the chapter on what has been a truly remarkable journey.”
The company cites economic downturn and challenges within both the retail and outdoor industries as reasons it can no longer sustainably continue operating.
“This decision is in no way a reflection of the dedication, talent, and hard work of the Breathe Outdoors team,” it continues. “We are incredibly proud of our employees, who have put their hearts into making this business what it is today.”
Breathe Outdoors says its general manager, Doug Dea, and a dedicated team will remain in place throughout the transition.

“Being part of Alberta’s outdoor community has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life,” Dea said. “We’ve swapped adventure stories, shared gear recommendations, and celebrated the great outdoors together at events and in our stores. This is more than just a business — it’s a community, and I will always cherish the connections we’ve built.”
The closure process will be gradual, with stores and its website remaining open for shopping during the transition. Closure dates are as follows, though subject to change based on inventory:
- South Edmonton – April 30, 2025
- West Edmonton – June 30, 2025
- Calgary – Sept. 30, 2025
- breatheoutdoors.ca – Sales will cease June 30, 2025; site will remain for information until the wind down is complete
Gift cards will be accepted until the respective store closure dates.
After June 1, 2025, all sales in Edmonton and online will be final.
After Aug. 1, 2025, all sales in Calgary will be final.
Breathe Outdoors confirmed it will continue bringing in new arrivals for Spring/Summer 2025 but will not place further orders beyond the upcoming season.
While there will be a Friends & Family Sale in April and a few additional sales through Spring and Summer, the company stated there are no plans for major liquidation or blowout sales.
Breathe Outdoors thanked its customers for their support over the years.
“From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being part of this journey with us. Whether you’ve been with us since the early days or just recently discovered our store, we are so grateful for your support. We hope you continue to explore, seek adventure, and find joy in the great outdoors.”
