A northern Alberta couple is making their decades-long dream of homeownership a reality after scoring big in a lottery game earlier this month.

Stacy Brown was picking up a few groceries with his wife when he noticed the Lightning Lotto jackpot was nearly one million dollars.

“I said, ‘I’ve never seen it this high — it’s gonna go soon!’” he said. “And I bought a ticket!”

The couple is glad they did, as they instantly matched the five numbers selected in the March 2 draw, resulting in the $987,430.20 win.

“My wife was somewhere else in the store getting bread, and when she walked up, she saw the cashier and I freaking out together!” he laughed. “Then she saw the number, and we all celebrated together!”

“I’ve lived here for 30 years, and we’re finally going to buy a house,” he beamed. “That’s a guarantee.”

“We might take a cruise somewhere — a nice vacation,” he added. “It’ll be nice to pay off all our bills, too, of course.”

The winner said winning the instant jackpot was like nothing he’d ever experienced.

“I’m excited,” he said. “You go through every emotion — but I’m happy, very happy!”

“Now I can buy what I like!” he smiled.

Brown purchased his winning Lightning Lotto ticket from Winks Slave Lake, located at 801 6th Ave. SW.
