The “Smoak the Vote” campaign has won, and Justin Smoak will indeed start for the American League at the MLB All-Star Game July 11th in Miami.
Smoak surpassed Kansas City Royals’ first baseman Eric Hosmer in votes down the stretch.
Not that he didn’t deserve it.
Smoak is the feel-good story for the Blue Jays this year.
Originally expected to platoon at first base, he has been a consistent offensive threat as an everyday player. The 30-year-old has 22 home runs, which is already a career high and has him tied for fourth-place in the league. The third-year Blue Jay also ranks second in OPS (.964), trailing only Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge.
Smoak was asked to participate in the home run derby, but respectfully declined.
“I told them if they came to watch my BP they wouldn’t want me in the home run derby,” Smoak said.
