Drive-in movie theatre pop-up returning to Calgary this summer

As recommended by health officials, if you choose to participate in events outside of your home, please adhere to COVID-19 health and safety measures, including proper physical distancing, mask-wearing, and frequent handwashing. If you are sick, please stay home.

Good news, Calgary. TELUS Spark Science Centre has announced that they’ll be partnering up with Big Art again this summer to bring back their drive-in movie series.

If you were lucky enough to catch this event last year, you already know how much fun it is. If not, you’re getting a second chance.

Here’s how it works. Pre-purchase tickets online for the show of your choice, then head to TELUS Spark at your designated event time. Movie-goers are allowed into the venue up to one hour before the film starts, and parking stalls are given out on a first-come, first-served basis.

There are three LED video screens to help ensure everyone gets a good view, but since the TELUS Spark parking lot is pretty flat, it’s recommended that viewers arrive early for a better spot.

Movie audio is transmitted directly into your vehicle via FM radio, and they’ll even have snacks and drinks available for purchase onsite, with ushers taking orders and bringing treats right to your car.

According to Big Art’s website, the Calgary venue will be open Tuesday to Sunday throughout the summer, and the first screening could be as early as June 3. Movies typically start at 6 pm and 9 pm.

Admission prices aren’t up yet, but one ticket is good for a vehicle of up to five people.

Of course, just like everything else these days, the drive-in events will be tied to current public health measures. “Dependent on AHS regulations, you will be able to come and chill at the big screen this summer!” TELUS Spark said in an Instagram post.

It sounds like Big Art also has some tricks up their sleeve to step up the regular drive-in movie experience. “With the use of special FX, large format concert sound and lighting, and live action actors, we will deliver an interactive cinematic experience never before seen in Calgary,” reads their website.

No movie lineup has been announced just yet, but TELUS Spark assured Calgarians on Instagram that they’ll keep us posted as they know more.
