Bieksa rips into Calgary Flames' Sharangovich after slow start to season

It’s looking like another one of those seasons for the Calgary Flames.

A brutal 6-1 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights put the Flames at a disappointing 1-5-0 record to start the season, which is good enough for dead last in the NHL through the first six games.

The scoring troubles have been immense, as Calgary has been held to two or fewer goals in each of the last five games. Everybody has been struggling, but there has been some added attention on Yegor Sharangovich, who has a single assist thus far.

It’s been tough sledding for the 27-year-old Belarusian ever since he inked a $28 million deal back in the summer of 2024. Since then, his production has taken a nosedive, and he has looked like a shell of the player who netted 31 goals in the 2023-24 season.

Kevin Bieksa took a special interest in Sharagovich after Saturday’s loss, shredding him for his performance.

“The concern is if you’re losing games and guys are not giving it their all,” Bieksa said while teeing up a clip. “Watch this effort right here, down 6-1, I think [Sharangovich] apologized for almost hitting Karlsson there.

“That’s a culture thing for me… If you’re going to get an effort like that from a guy, get rid of him. You’re disgracing the NHL with an effort like that.”

It wasn’t expected to be a great season for the Flames, but they also weren’t expected to be quite this bad off the jump. This is a team that came off a gruelling playoff push last season, only to miss out on a berth at the very end.

There is a lot of pride with this Flames team and how they play, but Bieksa felt like Sharangovich is not fitting in with that identity.

“That guy doesn’t hate to lose,” Bieksa said. “I wouldn’t want a guy like that… That’s a pretty glaring problem for me if I’m anyone on that team.”

A lot will have to change if the Flames want to get this season back on track. Sharangovich was an easy target for Bieksa, but the whole team has been underperforming.
