A popular Banff destination will now be closed for longer than planned

If you planned to check out one of the most iconic tourist destinations in Banff, you are going to have to wait a little bit longer for it to reopen.

The Banff Upper Hot Springs has been closed since early September to undergo necessary maintenance work and facility upgrades, and was set to reopen late next month.

Parks Canada now says that while working in the area over the past few months, it had the opportunity to address further structural issues.

“The site is now expected to reopen in early 2026. The entire facility remains closed to the public during this time,” Parks Canada added.

Parks Canada will provide an update once a reopening date has been confirmed. We look forward to welcoming visitors again once this necessary work is completed.

Canadian Pacific Railway workers discovered the Cave and Basin Hot Springs at the foot of Sulphur Mountain back in 1883, which captured the attention of the nation and led to the creation of Canada’s first national park, Banff National Park.

This isn’t the first time the hot springs have undergone a bit of a facelift.

On Canada Day, 1932, the Upper Hot Springs bathhouse opened, complete with sulphur water swimming pool, plunge baths, steam rooms, tubs, showers and dressing rooms.

The pool was reconstructed, and the interior of the bathhouse was modified in 1961. In 1995, restoration of the bathhouse to its 1932 appearance occurred. The restored bathhouse opened in August 1996 with a new spa, restaurant and gift shop as added services.

It’s shaping up to be a busy few months of upgrades in Banff, with one section of the downtown core seeing some heavy maintenance upgrades into next year.
