Asexual: A Love Story reveals hidden world of life without sex (VIDEO)

A new short documentary funded by TELUS Optik Local is shedding light on a little known area of human identity – asexuality.

Asexual: A Love Story, directed by Melinda Friedman, shares the stories of several young men and women who don’t feel the desire to have sex.

As Justine, an asexual woman, explains in the film, she didn’t have sexual feelings growing up but thought she just hadn’t met the right person.

“All through high school, I just never participated in the dating culture at all,” she says. “I felt like, maybe I needed to fall in love first, before I would feel this mythical sexual attraction.”

Later on, at university, she did fall in love – but it didn’t help.

“Conversations around sex became conversations around inadequacies and feelings of rejection,” she says in the film.

“I felt like I wasn’t worthy of love, I was never going to find love or companionship, I was going to die alone.”

But, for Justine and the others who took part in the film, things are getting better; they all managed to find support through Asexual Visibility and Education Network.

Justine now lives a happy polyamorous life with three different partners, while another couple, Jenny and Darius, both asexual, met through the network and are now engaged.

Angie, who is going through a divorce after she and her wife struggled to come to terms with her asexuality, says finding out there were others like her was a revelation.

“It was the most amazing feeling because I felt like, I’m not this screwed up, broken person. It’s just the way I am and it’s fundamentally part of me.”
