We are nearing the end of April, but that isn’t stopping Old Man Winter from making a spring appearance, with some parts of Alberta forecast to see up to 25 cm of snow by tomorrow morning.
Luckily, places like Edmonton and Calgary aren’t in the bullseye for significant snow; however, portions of western Alberta aren’t sitting as pretty.
Snowfall warnings were issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) on Monday morning, with heavy flurries expected with total snowfall amounts in the 10 to 25 cm range.
ECCC stated that showers and flurries are expected in Alberta today and tonight, with precipitation falling mainly as snow over higher terrain west of Highway 2. Highly localized amounts of 10 to 15 cm are possible over a short period.
“Due to the convective nature of this weather system, conditions will be highly variable throughout the region. This snowfall event will end by Tuesday morning,” the federal weather agency added.
Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow, and surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways, and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop. Take frequent breaks and avoid strain when clearing snow.
Snowfall warnings are in place for areas such as Carstairs, Robb, Cochrane, Canmore, Cynthia, Rocky Mountain House, and Kananaskis Village. The full list of warnings can be found online.
As for how the week is shaping up for Edmonton and Calgary, YYC may see some rain or snow today and tonight, while YEG will be marked safe from the threat of snow, with a high of 12°C today and mainly cloudy.
