New Apple iOS 9.3 feature to eliminate blue light at night

Apple has announced the new features available in iOS 9.3, including a special light to make using the phone at night less disruptive.

In a preview to iOS 9.3 release Wednesday, Apple touted the new Night Shift enhancement, which changes the light spectrum used during night hours to make falling asleep easier.

“Many studies have shown that exposure to bright blue light in the evening can affect your circadian rhythms and make it harder to fall asleep,” Apple says. “Night Shift uses your iOS device’s clock and geolocation to determine when it’s sunset in your location. Then it automatically shifts the colors in your display to the warmer end of the spectrum, making it easier on your eyes. In the morning, it returns the display to its regular settings.”

Eliminating blue light on devices is something that has been hitting the tech blogs lately and has already resulted in several apps like Koala Browser and f.lux which put a warm-coloured overlay on devices’ screens while used at night.

Other features included in the update are secure notes locked by password or fingerprint in the Notes app, a better-tailored News app with trending topics and Editor’s Picks, an upgraded Health app intregrated with Apple Watch, and an enhanced Car Play app.

The new operating system also comes better equipped for classroom use with a new Classroom app that manages lesson plans, track students’ progress, and manages multiple iPads throughout a school system.
