Amazon is launching a brand-new grocery store business this year: report

Mar 5 2019, 12:27 am

Amazon is planning to open grocery stores in cities across the US, according to the Wall Street Journal.

It’s written that the stores would be distinct from the Whole Foods Market chain.

The company’s first store is set to open in Los Angeles as early as the end of 2019, according to the article. Following that, Amazon has already signed leases for two other locations with openings expected in early 2020.

There’s discussion, the WSJ reports, about opening stores in San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Washington D.D, and Philadelphia.

The article states that in addition to the opening of these brand-new stores, Amazon is also looking into purchasing regional grocery chains with about a dozen stores under operation.

It also notes that just because the leases have been signed, doesn’t mean the stores are sure to open. Sometimes, retailers pull out of or delay store openings because conditions aren’t met.

If these stores move forward, the article states that Amazon is not looking to directly compete with Whole Foods grocers. Apparently, they will offer a different variety of products and a lower price-point, as Whole Foods doesn’t sell products with artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.

Word of this new grocery brand comes shortly after the doors of the company’s first no-line, cashier-less Amazon Go stores have begun to open.

Eyes are on this development, waiting to see when such stores might open across Canada as well.
