Here's where Alberta's 29 care centre outbreaks are located

The Province of Alberta has released the names of the continuing and acute care centres that are currently experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks.

Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw stated at a Tuesday press conference that an outbreak is qualified by a site where two or more cases have been detected.

“I know the word outbreak may seem alarming, especially when there are a number of them, and when some of them show a large number of cases,” she said.

“But it is important to remember that the outbreaks we are posting are any sites where we have seen two or more cases. This is usually an indication that transmission has occurred within that facility.”

She also noted that a precautionary outbreak is called for any facility where even one staff or resident has been confirmed to have coronavirus.

“Having this low threshold for reporting and outbreak measures ensures that public health is immediate involved to support the facility, and to protect the residents and staff from the spread of the virus.”

Once an outbreak as been declared, it will remain over the facility until four weeks have passed without a new case being detected. Only then, Hinshaw stated, will an outbreak be declared over.

Hinshaw also stated that she will be providing updates on any other outbreaks that may fall under unusual circumstances, and that, while only continuing and acute care centres are currently listed on the Province of Alberta’s website, the government’s goal is to “expand to other settings in the weeks to come.”
