Waves of snow forecast for Alberta with up to 20 cm on the way

Apr 5 2026, 6:45 pm

Keep your shovel handy, because parts of Alberta are forecast to see up to 20 centimetres of snow soon, including some major city centres.

We were warned late last month about how the weather in April was shaping up for Alberta, and spring may be taking a backseat at times over the next few months, too.

Looking at the Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) Significant Weather Outlook, small portions of Alberta are at risk of seeing snow on Monday, April 6.

The risk of snow is concentrated in the northern and middle portions of the Alberta Rockies,  with areas north and south of Jasper National Park potentially receiving five to 10 centimetres.

Further north, Grande Prairie to Rainbow Lake may also be hit by five to 15 centimetres of snow.

ECCC Significant Weather Outlook

The event on Tuesday, April 7, is set to be more impactful for Alberta, with some large cities at risk or very close to being included in the hazard areas.

The outlook is a busy one, with areas like Peace River and Lloydminster looking at 10 to 20 centimetres of snow, while areas such as High Prairie, Slave Lake, Athabasca, Lac La Biche, and Cold Lake get the highest weather threat of the day, with a moderate impact and 15 to 20 centimetres.

The Edmonton region, Edson, Drayton Valley, Whitecourt, Waterton Lakes National Park, and Jasper National Park may see five to 10 centimetres of snow, with Calgary just on the edge of that threat on Tuesday.

A strip of the Foothills may see snowfall amounts in the five to 15 centimetre range, and a wind threat of gusts up to 80 kilometres an hour is in play for southeastern Alberta.
