Snow is already falling in parts of Alberta on Tuesday afternoon, and some areas could see up to 15 cm by Thursday morning.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a special weather statement for large portions of central Alberta, stating that the “first significant snowfall of the year is expected.”

Areas under the special weather statement included Edmonton, Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Spruce Grove, Leduc, Camrose, Morinville, Red Water, Drayton Valley, and Tofield.

ECCC says a long-duration snowfall event is expected through parts of central Alberta beginning this evening and persisting until Thursday morning, and total snowfall amounts may reach 15 cm.

“Allow extra time for travel. Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating road conditions. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic,” the special weather statement added.

Last weekend, northeastern parts of Alberta were walloped by heavy snow, with some spots forecast to receive up to 40 cm.

You can view all the areas in Alberta under an ECCC special weather statement online.

Looking at the ECCC forecast for Edmonton, periods of snow and a high of 2°C are forecast, with about two cm of snow falling tonight and a low of -2°C. Tomorrow, Oct. 28, is set to bring 2 to 4 cm of snow during the day and wind gusts up to 40 km/h, with a high of -2°C. Periods of snow are forecast to continue into tomorrow night.

A bit of a warm-up for Halloween and the start of November is still set to happen, along with the rest of the province, ECCC told Daily Hive yesterday.
