
It was a chilly day in parts of Alberta yesterday, and one area set a nearly 120-year-old cold record in the heart of July.
A rare summer frost advisory was even issued for portions of the province yesterday, and some areas even saw the risk of snow making a July appearance. Talk about chilly!
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) stated in a weather summary on Wednesday morning that the Peace River area set a new record of a daily minimum temperature of just 2°C yesterday, besting the old record of 2.2°C set back in 1926. Records in the area date back to 1907, making it the lowest daily minimum temperature recorded in 118 years.
ECCC added that the following areas set or tied a daily minimum temperature record on July 22, 2025:
Cold Lake Area
New record of 2°C
Old record of 2.8°C set in 1966
Records in this area have been kept since 1952
High Level Area
New record of 1.4°C
Old record of 2.2°C in 1966
Records in this area have been kept since 1962
Lac La Biche Area
Tied record of 3.9°C set in 1968
Records in this area have been kept since 1944
Red Earth Creek Area
New record of 3°C
Old record of 5.9°Cset in 2005
Records in this area have been kept since 1994
ECCC added that the temperature records reported have been derived from a selection of historical stations in each geographic area that were active during the period of record.
