Alberta saw 691 new coronavirus cases over Labour Day long weekend

Alberta just saw one of its largest weekend increases in coronavirus cases to date.

The Province of Alberta has released updated COVID-19 numbers, detailing the new and active cases detected from September 4 to 7.

The update shows that 154 new cases were found on September 4, 171 on September 5, 137 on September 6, and 157 on September 7. The influx of new cases also brought up the province’s total active cases from 1,433 on September 4 to 1,692 as of September 8 — an increase of 259.

There were also five additional coronavirus-related deaths over the long weekend, with the total fatality count now sitting at 247 for the entirety of the pandemic.

Of the 45 people in hospital as a result of coronavirus, 10 are currently in intensive care.

13,154 cases have recovered from coronavirus in Alberta, and the province has now surpassed 1 million total tests completed, now having administered 1,052,446 tests to 825,046 people.

All regions of Alberta saw an increase in active cases over the long weekend, with Calgary jumping from 638 on Friday to 732 by Tuesday, and Edmonton from 544 to 648 over the same span of time.
