Alberta says over 100K have applied for Energy Rebate despite website glitches
Albertans applying for Alberta’s $100 Energy Rebate have reported issues with the online application portal, with many running into errors while trying to submit their payment information.
Some have received “Something went wrong” messages while others reported issues related to accessing Alberta.ca accounts and the payment verification step, which uses Interac’s Verification Service to confirm banking information.
Users on Reddit mentioned banks, including ATB, not being listed as an option during the verification process, while others reported that selecting the “My bank isn’t listed” option would only reload the page instead of allowing them to continue.
We reached out to the Province of Alberta, which noted it had corrected a sign-in issue affecting Alberta.ca accounts and was reviewing the application process to see where improvements could be made.
“Bank verification through Interac is available to any Canadian bank that chooses to participate. Not all banks currently offer this service to their customers,” said Jonathan Gauthier, press secretary for the Ministry of Technology and Innovation, adding that those whose bank does not participate can use the Document Verification option instead.
“We recognize this step has been a source of frustration for some applicants.”

According to Juliana Rodriguez, Treasury Board and Finance press secretary, more than 106,000 Albertans had already successfully submitted their Alberta Energy Rebate applications through the online portal as of Thursday afternoon.
Applications remain open until Sept. 30, 2026, so if you’ve had delays accessing the portal, you still have plenty of time to submit.
The Province says most applicants can complete the process in under two minutes. The portal website also mentions “higher than normal demand for an Alberta.ca Account may result in slower response times or difficulty applying for a rebate.”
