An Alberta city set a 121-year-old cold record on Thanksgiving

It was a chilly day in parts of Alberta yesterday, and one area set a more than 120-year-old cold record on Thanksgiving Day.

An early taste of winter hugged parts of the province over the long weekend, with some areas west of Calgary and in the Rockies getting a dump of snow, leading to travel chaos.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) stated in a weather summary on Tuesday that it was an “unseasonably cold Thanksgiving Day in Alberta.”

Numerous spots broke records, with the Red Deer area setting a new record of a daily minimum temperature with a bitter -12.7°C yesterday, surpassing the old record of -10.8°C set back in 2021. Records in the area date back to 1904, making it the lowest daily minimum temperature recorded in 121 years.

ECCC added that the following areas set or tied a daily minimum temperature record on Monday, Oct. 13, 2025:

Beaverlodge Area
New record of -9.1°C
Old record of -8.2°C set in 2009
Records in this area have been kept since 1912

Brooks Area
New record of -8.6°C
Old record of -7.8°C set in 1969
Records in this area have been kept since 1912

Drumheller Area
New record of -9.3°C
Old record of -8.3°C set in 1969
Records in this area have been kept since 1923

Edson Area
New record of -12.4°C
Old record of -10.7°C set in 1992
Records in this area have been kept since 1916

Hendrickson Creek Area
New record of -21.8°C
Old record of -18.5°C set in 2017
Records in this area have been kept since 1995

Jasper Area
New record of -9.9°C
Old record of -8.3°C set in 1930
Records in this area have been kept since 1916

Red Deer Area
New record of -12.7°C
Old record of -10.8°C set in 2021
Records in this area have been kept since 1904

ECCC added that theĀ temperature records reported have been derived from a selection of historical stations in each geographic area that were active during the period of record.
