Dec 3 2019, 1:11 am

A “security incident” on the front steps of Alberta’s Legislature temporarily adjourned this afternoon’s session.

“Shortly after 3 pm today, an incident involving a firearm occurred on the front steps of the Legislature,” said a release from Legislative Assembly Communications.

“There is no danger to anyone else on scene, and the matter has been contained by security and the Edmonton Police Service.”

In a message from his Twitter page this afternoon, Jason Kenney commented that he was “saddened by the tragic event that occurred.”

According to legislature staff, Edmonton Police Service and Edmonton Fire and Rescue attended and took conduct of the incident. “Alberta Sheriffs are helping hold the scene and are directing people to enter and exit the Legislature via the west doors,” a release said.

Staff say the Assembly will reconvene at 7:30 pm for the scheduled evening sitting.

Police confirmed to Daily Hive that the shooting has been deemed a “non-criminal incident”.
