Even on baseball’s biggest stage, Toronto Blue Jays bullpen pitchers sent a strong message.
Baseball is just a game.
Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Alex Vesia was not listed on the World Series roster for his team after they won the NCLS. The Dodgers announced before the World Series that he would be away from the team for a “deeply personal family matter.”
Vesia and his wife Kayla announced on Instagram back in April that they were expecting their first child. She last posted on Instagram during the Dodgers’ NLCS clinching victory, and her post is flooded with both Dodgers and Blue Jays fans offering their family love and support following the announcement of Vesia leaving the team.
Dodgers pitchers have been seen with Vesia’s No. 51 etched on their hats in this series.
Now, it looks like the Blue Jays’ bullpen has done the same.
Relief pitchers Louis Varland, Mason Fluharty, Seranthony Dominguez, and Chris Bassitt all had 51 written on their caps.

Toronto seemingly caught a break when they learned Vesia wasn’t going to be available for the World Series. The 29-year-old had 80 strikeouts in 59.2 innings pitched in the regular season. He also hadn’t surrendered a run in six straight playoff appearances.
However, as Blue Jays pitchers alluded to on Friday night, there are more important things in life than baseball.
