The New York Yankees drafted Surrey-born pitcher Jeff Degano during the second round of the MLB draft on Monday.

Degano, 22, is a 6-foot-4 graduate of Surrey’s Fraser Heights Secondary School and recently played for Indiana State University where he pitched 126 strikeouts over 99 games, making him one of the top 10 strikeout pitchers in U.S. NCAA baseball.

Degano was the Yankees’ third pick after right-handed pitcher James Kaprielian from UCLA and shortstop Kyle Holder from University of San Diego.

His college career wasn’t the smoothest due to an injury that required Tommy John surgery (a surgical graft procedure that replaces the ulnar collateral ligament in the medial elbow with another tendon) in 2013, yet Degano still manages to throw a a 90 to 94 mile per hour fastball and an above-average curveball.
