Yale Saloon: Blues venue gets new life as restaurant, music venue

The fate of Vancouver’s iconic blues club The Yale has hung in the balance for some time now, but the venue is poised to get a new lease on life as the Yale Saloon, offering food, drinks, and an assortment of live music.

The Yale Saloon is the project of The MRG Group, which is the team behind Vancouver’s Vogue Theatre and Biltmore Cabaret. They’ve gotten a hold of one of the biggest in-house industrial smokers in town in order to equip the Yale Saloon’s kitchen crew with the means to produce authentic BBQ eats.

Look for slow-cooked meats made with housemade rubs and vinegar-based BBQ sauce, and BBQ must-have sides like cornbread and coleslaw, along with lighter fare such as tacos and lettuce wraps. On the weekends, the Yale Saloon is saddling up to serve a country-style brunch.

Things that will stick around from the Yale’s past life are the iconic neon sign, as well as some of the blues music, though the live entertainment roster is widening to include jazz, karaoke, and other live music.

For something a little new–at least to the Yale–Thursday nights will feature a mechanical bull, for those who are brave (or indulge in enough liquid courage) to give it a try.
