
Day one was a smashing success for Rugby Sevens’ debut at BC Place, on and off the field.
Let’s start with on the field.
Canada showed well, scoring a monumental upset over a powerhouse Australian side. Canada also beat Russia, but lost to Wales on the last play of the game.
Unfortunately for Canada, two wins were not enough to send them to the next round. They’ll play in a consolation playoff on Sunday.
Fiji showed their class today, dazzling fans with their strength and speed, going 3-0 on the day. World rugby powers New Zealand and South Africa were the only other teams to go undefeated on day one.
Now let’s talk about the action off the field.
Rugby Sevens encourages fans to come in ‘fancy dress’ and many of the 30,000+ that showed up did not disappoint. The costumes were elaborate and the fans were loud.
